April 17, 1866: Sparked by a gentleman’s challenge among Captains of Mississippi Steam-boats, five of the great floating pleasure palaces took to the river to settle once and for all which was the fleetest ship. Captain Robert Truesmith, in command of the Queen of the West, engaged in some tomfoolery by secretly coating the Morning Star’s hull with fresh suet prior to the race. Truesmith’s gambit worked; the suet attracted the attention of “Grace,” the Mighty Mississippi Monster, shortly after the starting gun and the Morning Star was lost.
