September 10, 1813: After the sinking of his ship by the British, Commodore Oliver Perry rallied his men with a cry of his fallen friend’s last words, “Don’t Give Up the Ship!” Moved by this display of maritime heroics, the Mermen of Lake Erie surfaced to lend their assistance to Perry, which marked a turning point in the battle. Soon the British ships were overrun by Mermen troops, while Perry assumed command of the USS Niagara and routed the British fleet. Perry would later be named an “Honorary Citizen of the Underwater Realm” and was the U.S. Ambassador to the Mermen for many years.
