"This hand-engraved print dates from 1837, when Baltimore was a city in a period of rapid growth due to the influx of work on the B & O Railroad and easy access to shipping ports. Five years earlier, President John Quincy Adams had informally dubbed Baltimore the “Monumental City,” due not only to city’s large number of churches and monuments, but also in reference to the unusual amount of monsters or “monumental creatures” that roamed the area. In the years after Adams’ remark, amidst numerous monster sightings and attacks, Baltimore came to be known more simply as the “City of Monsters.”
