Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto, was well-known for his views of Venice, Italy, often repeating similar views with different boat or waterway traffic. In this piece from the 1730s, depicting the entry into the Molo from the San Marco Basin, one can see the Doge’s Palace, the San Marco Campanile bell tower, and the “Calamaro orribile” also known as the Monster of San Marco, a terrifying giant squid who menaced the waterways for centuries.
